predictability, control, and familiarity. The unknown can feel risky, uncomfortable, or even dangerous. We become cautious, overthink, rehearse conversations, stick with routines, and avoid experiences that might make us feel uncertain or exposed. While this can help create temporary safety, it can also limit aliveness, creativity, connection, and growth.

Thriving invites us to loosen the grip of constant self-protection. As we become more grounded, open hearted, and present, we gain the ability to respond to life rather than react from fear. This naturally opens space for spontaneity. We may suddenly feel inspired to explore somewhere new, express appreciation more freely, dance, create, laugh, or say yes to an unexpected opportunity. Spontaneity helps us step beyond rigid patterns and experience life more directly.

There is also a paradox within spontaneity. It is both a pathway into Thriving and Awakening and an outcome of them. Choosing spontaneity can interrupt old survival habits and awaken new possibilities. At the same time, as awakening deepens, spontaneity begins to arise more naturally because there is less attachment to control and less fear of the unknown. Life flows more freely through you.

Awakening is not rigid or mechanical. It is alive, immediate, creative, and continuously unfolding. Spontaneity allows us to participate more fully in that unfolding mystery.

Reflection:

Notice where you tend to hold tightly to predictability or routine. What small spontaneous choice could you make today that feels alive, playful, or meaningful? Observe what thoughts or fears arise? What becomes possible when you gently move beyond them.

Choose to choose

Choice is not always as available as we Much of what we do comes from automatic reactions shaped by past experiences, conditioning, and the body’s need to feel safe.

In those moments it can feel like there is no choice at all. Thoughts, emotions, and behaviors arise quickly and move us in a familiar direction. This is Survival Mode doing what it was designed to do.

Choosing to choose begins with awareness. When you notice a reaction as it is happening, even briefly, a space opens. In that space, you are no longer completely identified with the reaction. You begin to see that another way is possible.

From there, you can bring in Compassionate Curiosity and Complete Acceptance. Rather than judging the reaction, you understand it. You recognize it as a protective pattern, not a fixed identity. This softens the grip and expands your capacity to respond.

Now the choice becomes real. You can continue the familiar reaction, or you can choose a more grounded, heartfelt, and open-minded response. Each time you do, you are strengthening your ability to choose again.

Choosing to choose is the foundation of Thriving. It is the movement from automatic living to conscious participation in your life.

Reflection

Notice one moment today where you feel pulled into an automatic reaction. See if you can pause just long enough to recognize it. It is a doorway.

When fear, anger, or anxiety arise, the body and mind tighten in an effort to protect. This is a natural Survival Mode reaction. Most of the time, we resist the contraction, judge it, get lost in it, or try to push it away. That resistance keeps the pattern in place.

If instead you bring awareness to the contraction, something different becomes possible. You begin to notice the thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without immediately reacting. With Compassionate Curiosity and Complete Acceptance, the contraction shifts from something to avoid or get lost in, to something to learn from.

As you stay present with it, you can begin to see what it is trying to protect, what belief is underneath, and what is no longer needed. In that moment, you have a choice. You can continue the automatic reaction, or you can respond in a more grounded and open way.

Over time, each contraction becomes part of your training. What once closed you begins to open you. The very patterns that limited you become the path to greater awareness, flexibility, and presence.

Reflection

Notice a recent contraction in your day. Rather than seeing it as a setback, consider what it revealed. What was it protecting? What did it invite you to see more clearly? Each time you stay present with a contraction instead of resisting it, you are strengthening your capacity for openness.

There is only It is found by moving with it.

The mind often looks for freedom in the future, once things are resolved, improved, or made more certain. This keeps us subtly resisting what is here now. That resistance creates tension, and tension limits our sense of freedom.

Flow begins with a simple shift. Allowing this moment to be as it is. Not as resignation, but as a conscious “yes” to reality. When you meet the moment with acceptance and even gratitude, something softens. The need to control loosens and space opens within you.

From that space you are no longer driven only by automatic reactions. You can respond with greater clarity, steadiness, and openness. The body is more grounded, the heart more available, and the mind less entangled.

Flow is not passive. It is a dynamic participation with life as it unfolds. It includes releasing the attachments and expectations that the ego holds for safety. You then discover a deeper sense of safety is already here in presence itself.

Freedom is not somewhere else. It is experienced in how you are with this moment.

Reflection

Take a moment to notice where you may be resisting something in your life right now. Gently experiment with allowing it to be as it is, even for a few breaths. What shifts when you meet the moment with a quiet “yes”?

Your future is determined by how you are in this tension, trying to predict and control what cannot be known. This often shows up as worry, overthinking, or holding tightly to outcomes.

Thriving begins when you recognize uncertainty as part of life and bring awareness to your reactions. You can Ground & Breathe, soften the body, and allow space for not knowing.

From this space, you shift from reacting to responding. You move with life rather than bracing against it. You are proactive and have complete acceptance for present limitations. The complete acceptance brings a groundedness and clarity of mind, so you can choose if and how to be proactive again.

Awakening deepens this further. You begin to sense that uncertainty is not separate from you. It is part of the unfolding mystery that you are. Embracing the uncertainty feeds your creative nature. You get to explore realms of possibility.

Reflection:

Where in your life are you trying to create certainty? What happens if you pause, breathe, and allow things to be just as they are?

Dynamic balance comes from a blend of thriving In reality, life is always moving. Emotions shift, circumstances change, and unexpected challenges arise. Thriving does not come from holding life still. It comes from learning how to stay balanced within constant movement.

This is why dynamic balance develops through a blend of tools rather than relying on just one. Mindfulness helps you notice what is happening in the moment. Ground and Breathe settles the body and nervous system when stress arises. Compassionate Curiosity opens the mind and heart to understanding rather than judgment. Complete Acceptance allows you to meet reality as it is instead of resisting it. Clearing Reactivity helps release the automatic reactions that pull you back into Survival Mode.

Each tool supports a different aspect of awareness and regulation. As you practice them together, they begin to work like a coordinated system. One tool helps calm the body, another opens perspective, and another helps release old patterns. Over time they blend naturally, allowing you to stay present, flexible, and grounded even when life becomes challenging.

Dynamic balance is not something you achieve once and keep forever. It is something you cultivate moment by moment by choosing the tools that help you remain steady, open, and engaged with life.

Reflection

Notice which Thriving Tool you naturally reach for when life becomes stressful. Is it calming the body, observing the moment, becoming curious, accepting what is happening, or clearing reactivity? Consider how blending two or more of these tools together might support a deeper sense of balance in the situations you face.

As you become more It is the quiet presence noticing your thoughts, emotions, sensations, and experiences. For most of us it sits in the background while the activity of the mind takes center stage. Thoughts, worries, plans, and reactions become so loud that we forget the deeper awareness in which they are appearing.

When we become more conscious, we expand our capacity to observe inner and outer experiences with clarity, presence, and choice rather than automatic reactivity. Awareness, the knowing presence, becomes more apparent. Instead of being completely absorbed in every thought or emotion, you see them arise and pass. You will still think, feel, and react; but there is also a subtle sense of watching it happen.

Over time this awareness moves from the background to the foreground of experience. Life continues to unfold with its joys and challenges, yet there is more space around everything. You begin to experience yourself not only as the one thinking and feeling, but also as the awareness in which thinking and feeling occur.

This shift does not remove you from life. Rather, it allows you to participate more fully and consciously in it.

Reflection

Take a moment today to be the awareness that is noticing. Thoughts may come and go, emotions may rise and fall, and the body may shift from calm to tension and back again. Something quietly knows all of it. Rest your attention there for a few moments and see what you discover.

Being in the emptiness is the foundation of The emptiness spoken of in many contemplative traditions is not a barren space but an open field in which everything arises.

When the mind quiets and we are no longer filling every moment with thoughts, plans, worries, and reactions, we begin to sense this openness. At first it may feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, because the ego is used to defining itself through activity and identity. But if we allow ourselves to rest there, something remarkable happens.

Within that emptiness we begin to notice the richness of experience unfolding naturally. Thoughts appear and dissolve. Emotions move through like weather. Sensations arise in the body. Life continues expressing itself in countless forms. The emptiness is not the absence of life. It is the spacious ground that allows everything to exist.

In this way, emptiness becomes the foundation of everythingness. When we are willing to rest in the emptiness, the fullness of life reveals itself more clearly.

Reflection

Take a few quiet moments today and allow the mind to settle. Notice the space between thoughts, the simple presence that remains when nothing needs to be added or solved. Rather than trying to fill that space, see what happens if you simply rest in it. What you call emptiness may reveal itself as a deeper fullness of being.

Domination & oppression are woven into our They are deeply rooted survival instincts that helped our ancestors stay alive. When resources were scarce or threats were present, groups that could assert power, defend territory, and control danger were more likely to survive. These instincts became wired into our nervous systems.

In current times the impulse to dominate or oppose others can still get activated instantly. When we perceive another person, group, or country as threatening or trying to exert control, our survival reactions often push us toward asserting power in return. Much of what we see in relationships, organizations, and global conflicts reflects this ancient pattern playing out in modern life.

The work of evolving our consciousness is not to shame this tendency, but to first recognize it with Complete Acceptance. When we bring awareness to the instinct, we can have compassion for the protective role it once played. From that place of understanding and compassion, we gain the ability to choose a different expression of strength.

Instead of domination, we can assert ourselves in ways that are grounded, heartfelt, and open-minded. Strength no longer needs to come from overpowering others. It can come from clarity, presence, and a willingness to engage with firmness and respect at the same time.

Reflection

Notice the moments when you feel the urge to control, dominate, or push against someone who seems threatening or opposing. Rather than judging the impulse, recognize it as an old survival reaction trying to protect you. With awareness and compassion, ask yourself what a grounded, heartfelt, and open-minded response might look like instead.

Accept what is at the Its meaning becomes clearer when we walk through the steps.

The first step in learning Complete Acceptance begins with awareness that we tend not to accept what is. We are wired to resist what we don’t like. Resistance is part of our survival mode.

Take a moment and think of the things you do not like in life. Notice how you resist them. That resistance may show up as anger, frustration, withdrawal, or avoidance. There are many forms of resistance. Start by accepting that this is part of your human nature. In life threatening situations, resistance may be your best survival strategy.

The second step is having compassion for your resistance. This is where Compassionate Curiosity comes in. It means reflecting deeply from a place of kindness rather than judgment. Try opening your heart to all the ways you avoid or react, even when those patterns aren’t serving you. For example, you may avoid exercise or an important conversation. If you judge yourself for resisting, you are simply resisting your resistance.

The third step is accepting that life is evolving. We learn from what works and from what does not. Just as we fall off a bike to learn balance, we resist in order to see how resistance throws us off balance. When you bring Compassionate Curiosity to your experience, you become more aware and intentional in your choices.

The fourth step is recognizing that wherever you are in your evolution, you are complete in this moment. A tree is complete whether it is a sapling or fully grown. A three year old is complete at three. You don’t expect them to be ten. You accept them exactly as they are.

You can learn to Completely Accept yourself with compassion for where you are right now. Wherever you are is not a mistake. It is the ground from which the next step in your evolution naturally emerges.

Contemplation:

Take a quiet moment today and notice where you are resisting life. Instead of trying to fix or push it away, gently place your awareness in your heart and simply acknowledge what is present. Can you allow it to be here without argument? Complete Acceptance does not mean passivity. It means meeting reality with an open heart so that your next step arises from clarity rather than resistance. This is how Survival softens into Thriving which then opens into Awakening.

You are just a witness of what’s We often have difficulty being the witness as life unfolds. Instead, we interpret everything based on our limited perceptions, history, and personality style. We get immersed in others’ stories rather than remain a compassionate witness.

Imagine you have a friend who did not return your text earlier in the day. You call to check in, and he answers in an abrupt and frustrated tone, “What do you want?” Most people would feel offended or put off. After all, you were simply being kind and did not expect to be treated that way.

This is the moment we leave the seat of the witness and judge someone else’s story. We assume their tone is about us. Later we learn that this friend was fired that day and was carrying anger and shock. With that understanding, it becomes easier to return to being a compassionate witness rather than a reactive participant.

Take some time to notice the subtle ways you leave the position of witness to this extraordinary universe unfolding before you. Notice how quickly the mind personalizes what is happening. It is natural, yet when everything becomes about us, we lose perspective. We lose awe. We lose the quiet wonder of life emerging moment by moment.

Courage is facing our illusions

Much of what we take as Physics and psychology both point to a deeper reality where everything is more fluid and interconnected than it appears. It takes courage to question what we assume is real and to live from a deeper understanding rather than from appearances alone.

We live within a set of powerful illusions, and we usually don’t question them. One of the most familiar is the sense that everything is solid. You feel solid. Your home feels solid. The world appears solid. Yet physics shows us something quite different. What we call matter is mostly space, a dynamic field of energy. This is why signals like WiFi can move freely through walls and rooms. What feels fixed is far more fluid than it appears.

Another common illusion is the belief that we fully choose our thoughts. While choice exists, much of our thinking and emotional reacting is conditioned. Our perceptions are shaped by early experiences, personality style, biology, and culture. We take in only a narrow slice of reality and then interpret it through filters we did not consciously choose. If you had grown up in a different family or culture, with a different temperament, your beliefs about the world would be very different.

Perhaps the most deeply held illusion is the belief that we are separate from one another. Modern physics helps us understand our connection within the Universe. The elements that make up your body were formed in exploding stars. The same energetic field that expresses itself as you expresses itself as everything and everyone. Research into quantum entanglement shows that particles once connected remain correlated across vast distances, suggesting a reality that is fundamentally interconnected rather than fragmented.

There are many other examples, but these illustrate how easily we live guided by appearances rather than deeper reality. It takes courage to examine these illusions, not to discard everyday functioning, but to see beyond it. Cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman suggests our perceptions are like the instruments on a cockpit dashboard. They help us navigate, but they are not reality itself.

Courage is the willingness to look beyond the dashboard and question what we assume is solid, separate, and under our control. Doing so brings an understanding of the vastness of reality and the mystery of existence and connection.

Creativity can get blocked when you stay By its nature, creativity involves moving beyond what is familiar. This can feel challenging because the ego experiences safety in what is known and predictable.

Many people recognize that creative insights often arise when they step away from a problem. You may have been writing, planning, or trying to solve something, only to have a fresh idea emerge while walking, showering, or doing something entirely different. Creativity often appears when effort softens and openness increases.

Play is another doorway into creativity. When we play, we loosen rigid patterns of thinking and invite new possibilities. This is why many organizations intentionally include playful elements in brainstorming sessions. Innovation requires seeing beyond existing structures. For example, Uber emerged from a willingness to question long standing assumptions about ownership, roles, and systems.

It can be helpful to notice your comfort level with being creative. What fears arise? A common one is concern about how others will view your ideas. We are wired to seek belonging, which can lead us either to overperform creatively or to hold ourselves back entirely. In unfamiliar territory, we often retreat to what feels safe and known.

There is a paradox here. We are wired for safety, yet our species evolves by thinking outside the box and being different. Creativity is not foreign to us. It is essential for our growth. Thriving Tools such as Mindfulness, Complete Acceptance, and Compassionate Curiosity help us meet fear with awareness rather than avoidance.

Take a breath. Step gently outside the zone of the known. Explore something you’re drawn to with curiosity and play. Whatever emerges, you will be learning.

Contemplative meditation is beyond concepts. The mind wanders freely or focuses on a specific topic. You might contemplate your job, your relationships, or whether your life feels satisfying. This kind of contemplation stays largely at the level of thought.

Contemplative meditation moves beyond thinking and into direct experience. It invites a deeper state of receptivity.

Begin by choosing a topic to contemplate, such as life purpose or a recurring emotional pattern. Then enter meditation in a grounded, open-hearted, and clear-minded way. As the mind becomes quiet and spacious, you are no longer analyzing the topic. You are opening to a full-bodied experience related to it.

Why does this matter? The thinking mind mostly accesses what is already near the surface. Some memories are not immediately present, yet can be recalled when prompted. For example, you may not be thinking about the name of your high school, but you can retrieve it easily when asked.

Contemplative meditation creates the conditions for something deeper. It opens awareness to material that is not readily accessible even with prompting. This includes emotions, beliefs, and experiences that were never fully processed.

For example, you may notice that you become angry in certain situations and do not understand why. This is a powerful time to practice contemplative meditation. Begin with regular meditation, then gently ask, “Why do I keep getting angry in these situations?” After asking, return to stillness.

Rather than searching for an answer, you allow an experience to emerge. You may reconnect with an early memory or emotional state that shaped this reaction. By meeting it from a grounded and loving place, you bring compassion to an earlier version of yourself who did not yet have the skills or support to respond differently.

Contemplative meditation becomes a doorway. It allows old survival responses to be felt, understood, and released. From this space, healing unfolds naturally, opening the way to greater thriving and awakening.

Emptiness is the experience of the quiet Can you experience emptiness?

Our thoughts are vital to our well-being and functioning in the world. Our emptiness is just as vital. The emptiness is the realm of possibility.

We are often uncomfortable with emptiness. Notice when you are waiting in line and feel the strong urge to check your phone. A busy mind feels productive, engaged, and safe. This impulse to keep the mind busy keeps us in Survival Mode. It’s natural as constant vigilance of our surroundings once kept our ancestors safe from predators.

Thriving Mode has two essential qualities of the mind. One is being mindful of what you are thinking, so you can consciously choose what serves your best interests. The second is being comfortable with longer intervals of emptiness. Meditation helps develop this capacity. As you cultivate a focused and quiet mind, a balance naturally emerges between the two hemispheres of the brain. Emptiness then becomes a source of inspiration, creativity, and possibility.

In Awakening Mode, the quiet mind becomes more prominent and gently holds space for the busy mind, much like the sky holds birds and clouds as they move through it. This creates a greater sense of flow across all situations.

If you are new to this work, begin by noticing and appreciating the emptiness between thoughts. If that feels comfortable, allow yourself to sense the peace, presence, and quiet excitement that arise when resting in the mystery and magic of emptiness.

Compassion is learning to fully embrace yourself exactly as you are

We create much of our suffering by We judge some personal quality according to an ideal we’ve created. We know our ideal weight, ideal voice, ideal intelligence, ideal humor, etc.

Take a moment. Think of all the ways you have this sense of not being good enough as you are.

The feeling you get from this judgment is exactly why self-compassion is absolutely essential for your personal development and conscious awakening. The more you judge yourself, the worse you will feel, and then you’ll judge yourself for feeling so badly about yourself. Self-Compassion helps you get off the merry-go-around of inadequacy.

Anything short of completely accepting yourself is still self-criticism. The only solution is to fully embrace yourself as you are, right now, in this moment. It is who and where you are.

I frequently hear, “if I embrace where I am, I won’t be motivated to change.” This is simply a fear-based assumption. Imagine saying the following to an eight-year-old getting ready for school…”you should be unhappy with yourself because you fall short all the time. You have to be really hard on yourself if you are going to make anything of your life.” No! Don’t say it to a child and don’t say it to yourself.

As you embrace yourself as you are, you will feel more grounded, supported, confident and nourished. Think about how trees prosper when they are nurtured with the right support. They don’t stop growing because they have water, sun, and nutrients. It’s the opposite, they flourish. And you will too.

Pick one way you have considered yourself as not enough. Embrace that about yourself without trying to improve anything for 3 days. Bring deep compassion and embrace for that quality as a growing edge. See what happens when you love yourself as you are.

A significant choice in life is choosing to either resist or embrace Our tendency is to resist what we don’t like or understand. Although natural, resistance creates emotional discord which releases stress hormones, and over time, it leads to inflammation and physical and emotional imbalances. When you are aware, you can choose to choose.

If it’s raining when you had planned an outdoor event, you’re likely to get disappointed and even angry. But if it’s raining and wanted to spend the day reading, you’re likely to welcome the rain. We resist what is not ideal or what differs from how we want things to be.

Resistance is a Survival Mode strategy that can motivate us to make a change or be proactive. Think about a time you were frustrated with gaining weight and used that distress to motivate yourself to exercise.

Although the resistance can activate us to exercise, if we keep being frustrated about some aspect of life, we are likely to eat more and skip exercise as a way to zone out. Prolonged use of resistance keeps us in Survival Mode, going around and around, repeating the same cycle.

We also frequently resist what we don’t understand. If we’re feeling safe, the unknown can be exciting and evoke curiosity. But if not knowing something doesn’t feel safe, resistance kicks in. This can be seen in current society with our not knowing much about different cultures, religious practices, gender choices, romantic orientations, and so on. Survival Mode resistance kicks in because we are unfamiliar with those who are different than us and that can feel threatening. This resistance to embracing those who are different has led to perpetual oppression, abuse, and war. Our ancestors survived unfamiliar tribes by leading with resistance. It is part of our heritage and is wired in to our brains. If we don’t change, we run the risk of destroying life on our planet.

The hallmark of Thriving Mode is developing the capacity to CHOOSE how to think, feel, and act. It starts with an awareness of a habitual pattern that’s not in our best interest. Then we need to have compassion for the habit. We accept that these are ancestral tendencies emerging and the situation is an opportunity for change. Compassion is vital because if we resist what we are resisting, we only get more resistance. With the compassion present, we get to choose a healthier way to think, feel, and act.

The more we practice grounding, being open-hearted, and clear-minded, the more we can embrace what is, learn to flow, and act with wisdom and compassion. Embrace the next time it rains or you meet someone different than you. Both will help you evolve.
